More of America's Songs |
America
My country, 'tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills,
My heart with rapture thrills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet Freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of Liberty,
To thee we sing,
Long may our land be bright
With Freedom's holy light,
Protect us by thy might
Great God, our King.
Our glorious Land to-day,
'Neath Education's sway,
Soars upward still.
Its hills of learning fair,
Whose bounties all may share,
Behold them everywhere
On vale and hill!
Thy safeguard, Liberty,
The school shall ever be,
Our Nation's pride!
No tyrant hand shall smite,
While with encircling might
All here are taught the Right
With Truth allied.
Beneath Heaven's gracious will
The stars of progress still
Our course do sway;
In unity sublime
To broader heights we climb,
Triumphant over Time,
God speeds our way!
Grand birthright of our sires,
Our altars and our fires
Keep we still pure!
Our starry flag unfurled,
The hope of all the world,
In peace and light impearled,
God hold secure!

America, the Beautiful
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain.
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America! God men thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes prov'd
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry grain divine.
O Beautiful for patriot dream
that sees beyond the years.
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears.
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea. |

God Bless America
"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.
God Bless America.
Land that I love
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies ,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America
My home sweet home."

God Bless the U.S.A.
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota
to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas
from sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston
and New York to L.A.,
There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

The Marines Hymn
From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles
On the land as on the sea.
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marines.
Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job --
The United States Marines.
Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines. |

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the
Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel, writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment-seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me:
As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
--Julia Ward Howe

A New Wind a Blowin'
There's a brand new wind a-blowin' down that Lincoln
road.
There's a brand new hope a-growin' down where freedom's seeds are
sowed.
There's a new truth we'll be knowin' that will lift our heavy load,
When we find out what free men can really do.
There's a brand new day a-comin' for the land called U.S.A.
New tunes we'll be a-strummin' in our hearts by night and day.
As we march on we'll be hummin', how our troubles' gone away,
'Cause we've found out what free men can really do.
And if you feel like dancin' then, why come on folks, and dance!
And if you feel like prancin' then, why come on folks, and prance!
'Cause I really ain't romancin' when I say we've got our chance
To show 'em what free men can really do.
There's a brand new wind a-blowin' thru a land that's proud and free.
Ev'rywhere there's folks a-wakin' to a truth that's bound to be.
So let's all pull together for that day of victory,
And we'll show 'em what free men can really do!
--Langston Hughes

WHY THE AMERICAN FLAG IS FOLDED 13 TIMES
The American flag is folded 13 times. The 21-gun salute was
determined by adding the individual digits of 1776.
The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans
departing
our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our
country
to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American
citizens
trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in
time
of war for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of
Stephen
Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always
be
right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart
that we
pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to
the
Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with
Liberty and Justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is
through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag
against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the
boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley
of the
shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor
mother,
for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through
their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of
the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given
his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were
first born.
The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the
lower portion of the Seal of King David and King Solomon, and
glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an
emblem
of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and
Holy Spirit.
When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost
reminding us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust".
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the
appearance of
a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under
General George Washington, and the sailors and Marines who served
under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and
shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us
the
rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things which have deep
meaning.
You will see many flags folded in the coming weeks, and now you will
know
why it is folded thirteen times. |
